Managing time steps and realizations

JewelSuite provides several tools for working with properties that have multiple time steps or realizations. These properties can be recognized by the brackets [ ] at the end of their names in the JewelExplorer. You can select:

  • A specific time step using the Time Animation tool (Workspace > Tools)
  • A specific realization using the Realization slider under Display Settings in the Inspector ( Object Inspector).

Using the 'Manage Time Steps' and 'Manage Realizations' Tools

You can access these tools by opening the context menu of the property and selecting Tools and Operations > Manage time steps or Manage realizations. The relevant option will be displayed depending on the property type.

These tools allow you to remove time steps or realizations from a property. For example, when you have a dynamic pore pressure property on a 3D mesh for Geomechanics, but you want to reduce the number of time steps before running a simulation, you can use these tools.

When you open the tool, the Object and Property will already be selected. Then you can:

  • Choose whether to modify the original property or create a copy of the property with the selected steps. If you enable 'Apply selection to a copy of the property', the tool will automatically create a copy and apply your changes on top of it.
  • Be aware that if you leave this option unchecked, the changes will apply to the original property and cannot be undone.
  • Select the time steps or realizations you want to keep in the Step Selection Table.
  • Optionally, use the Step Selection Tools to assist with your table selections. You can use the Range option to specify a range of indices manually, or use the Interval option to keep or remove every nth step. Both tools will update the Step Selection Table to reflect your changes for checking or unchecking steps (i.e., keep or remove).
  • Press Apply or OK on the form to apply the selection and generate a property with fewer time steps or realizations.

The tools support multi-selection for properties with matching or compatible time steps or realizations, allowing you to apply changes to all selected properties in a single operation.

Using the 'Merge Time Steps' Tool

You can access this tool from the context menu when multiple time step properties that meet the criteria for merging are selected.

This tool allows you to combine multiple properties with different time step information into one. For two or more properties to fulfill the merging criteria, the following conditions must be met:

  • The properties must be on the same object.
  • The properties must be of the same type.
  • The time steps of the properties must not overlap, although they can be interwoven.

When you click Merge time steps, a new property is created under the object, named after one of the combined properties with the suffix _Merged. The time steps are combined and interwoven based on their time step information.

Using the Inspector to manage time steps

In the Inspector ( Property Inspector), you can modify the date of the currently selected time step on a property if needed. Use the Time Animation slider to select the time step in question, then edit the date in the Inspector (Property Inspector > Property > Current step date).

This functionality only allows changing the date of the time step while keeping it at the same step position within the property. In other words, the date of each step can only be edited to values between its neighboring steps. For example, if step 1 is January 1 and step 3 is January 10, the allowed dates for edits on step 2 are January 2-9. For the first and last time step of a property, the restriction applies only to their single neighbor.

The tool also supports multi-selection of properties with matching or compatible time steps, allowing you to apply changes to all selected properties in a single operation.
